Expect the Best!

Create Your Future…

Karen and Jay share thoughts on the magic of what can happen when you expect the best!

In many ways, our expectations create our future. Both for good and for outcomes that may not be so good. Interestingly, it is also an area where, if we choose to do so, we can have an immense amount of control. As the pastor Dr. Norman Vincent Peale so perceptively noted:

“This is one of the greatest laws in the universe…Simply stated: If you think in negative terms, you will get negative results. If you think in positive terms, you will achieve positive results. That is the simple fact which is at the basis of an astonishing law of prosperity and success. In three words, ‘Believe and succeed!”

In essence, I’ve found that our expectations act as a sort of compass, guiding our decisions and shaping our realities. When we adopt a mindset that envisions possibility and growth, we set ourselves on a path that is conducive to achievement and fulfillment. This is not merely wishful thinking; it is a recognized principle that resonates across various domains of life.

Athletes, for instance, often speak about visualization techniques as a game-changer in their training. When athletes like Michael Jordan engage in mental practices, imagining success on the court, they are not merely daydreaming. They are strategically embedding those visions into their psyche, paving the way for tangible results through sheer belief and dedication.

Consider the story of Thomas Edison, whose relentless spirit and unwavering belief in the power of invention brought about transformative changes in our world. Edison famously stated, "Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine

percent perspiration." This mantra underscores the significance of expectation; he envisioned success in his experiments not as an option but as an inevitable outcome of his hard work and perseverance – despite failure after failure until ultimately achieving his ‘expected success.’

Further, the impact of expectations extends beyond individual pursuits into collective endeavors. In the realm of education, for instance, teachers who harbor high expectations for their students often see remarkable results. This phenomenon, known as the Pygmalion effect, highlights the power inherent in belief systems within social contexts.

In sports, another powerful illustration of expectation shaping reality is the story of Jim Valvano, a college basketball coach known for his unwavering spirit. Valvano led the North Carolina State Wolfpack to an unexpected victory in the 1983 NCAA championship, a feat no one believed they could achieve. His mantra of "Don’t give up, don’t ever give up!" reflected a resolute belief in the potential of his team. Valvano's expectations of success, even against overwhelming odds, inspired not just his players but also a generation of fans, showing us that positivity in the face of adversity can alter the course of events, both on and off the field.

In essence, and as seen in countless real life examples, our expectations serve as a self-fulfilling prophecy, where positive anticipation breeds positive results, and negative thoughts can lead us down a path of limitation. Whether through visualization, maintaining high standards, or inspiring those around us, we have the capacity to shape our reality and embrace the bountiful possibilities that await us, fully subscribing to that timeless mantra of the beloved Dr. Peale: Believe and succeed!

Manchester-Boston Regional Airport: Expect the Best – and Getting Even Better!

Here’s an airport where you can literally ‘expect the best’ – and rarely be disappointed - Manchester-Boston. Getting even better – welcoming four additional airlines over the past four years!

By way of background, MHT’s journey began humbly in the 1920’s as a small airstrip with big dreams. By the 1940’s, it played a crucial role as a military base during World War II. But like any great underdog story, it didn’t stop there. Over the decades, the airport transformed from a modest regional stopover, known as Grenier Field, into a serious player in New England aviation. By the late 1990’s and early 2000’, it had skyrocketed in popularity, thanks in large part to airlines like Southwest, which made it an affordable and hassle-free alternative to the ever-chaotic Logan Airport in Boston. With easy parking, short lines, and a much calmer atmosphere, MHT became the go-to choice for savvy travelers.

Of course, the airline landscape has shifted over time. While major carriers like Delta, United, and American continue to serve MHT, the recent arrival of additional carriers, including Jet Blue, Breeze Airways, Sun Country and Avelo, adds excitement and growth.

And, the airport continues to evolve. One of the most significant transformations in recent years has been the rise of cargo operations. With e-commerce booming, MHT has become a vital shipping hub, with FedEx and UPS making it a key part of their supply chains—ensuring New Hampshire (and beyond) stays well-stocked with everything from holiday gifts to last-minute Amazon orders.

Leading the charge is airport director Ted Kitchens, a visionary force dedicated to positioning MHT as more than just a backup option. Under his leadership, the airport has pursued new airline partnerships, modernized its facilities, and fully embraced cargo as a game-changer for its future. His efforts are helping MHT solidify its status as a destination for both travelers and businesses alike.

Manchester-Boston Regional Airport may not be the biggest or flashiest airport in New England, but it has something special—convenience, ambition, and a whole lot of heart. And with leaders like Kitchens at the helm, the sky’s the limit.

New Hampshire’s Best: Innovation, Excellence, and Unmatched Quality

One of the wonderful qualities of the Granite State that I have always admired is our great ‘entrepreneurial spirit!” New Hampshire has long been a hub for innovation, resilience, and economic growth, so very consistent with our state motto: “Live Free or Die.” From the Seacoast to the White Mountains, the Granite State is home to exceptional businesses that not only lead their industries but also strengthen local communities. Whether in cutting-edge technology, advanced manufacturing, or world-class hospitality, these businesses exemplify New Hampshire’s commitment to expecting—and delivering—the best.

Each year, New Hampshire Business Review’s (NHBR) Best of Business Awards spotlight these leaders (see full details here). This week, we’re sharing a selection of standout winners across key industries.

Tech & Innovation: DEKA Research & Development Corp.

Manchester is emerging as a thriving tech hub—recently dubbed “Regenerative Valley”—thanks in large part to DEKA Research & Development Corp. Founded by renowned inventor Dean Kamen, DEKA has revolutionized the fields of medical and engineering technology. From the Segway to life-saving dialysis machines and the Coca-Cola Freestyle beverage system, DEKA, along with its affiliated Kamen-led enterprise ARMI, proves that groundbreaking innovation isn’t limited to Silicon Valley.

Manufacturing & Engineering: Hypertherm

Manufacturing remains a pillar of New Hampshire’s economy, and Hypertherm, based in Hanover, is at the forefront of the industry. A global leader in plasma and laser cutting technology, Hypertherm’s advanced solutions serve businesses worldwide, reinforcing the state’s reputation for manufacturing excellence.

Hospitality & Tourism: Omni Mount Washington Resort & Wentworth by the Sea

New Hampshire’s stunning landscapes draw millions of visitors each year, and its world-class hospitality ensures they keep coming back. The Omni Mount Washington Resort, an architectural marvel in Bretton Woods, has hosted U.S. presidents and world leaders while offering an unmatched luxury experience. Meanwhile, Wentworth by the Sea in New Castle blends historic charm with modern elegance, making it a premier destination for travelers seeking both relaxation and sophistication.

Outdoor & Recreation: Timberland & Gunstock Mountain Resort

Few states embrace the outdoors like New Hampshire. Timberland, headquartered in Stratham, has become a global leader in durable outdoor footwear, all while staying true to its sustainability-focused mission. For winter sports enthusiasts, Gunstock Mountain Resort in Gilford offers some of the best skiing, snowboarding, and year-round outdoor adventures in the region.

New Hampshire businesses don’t settle for average, they expect the best and, time and again, they deliver it.

Expecting the Best: How New Hampshire Athletes Turn Hard Work into Greatness

Expecting the best isn’t just about believing things will turn out well—it’s about putting in the work, pushing through challenges, and holding yourself to a higher standard. Few stories illustrate this better than those of athletes who rise to the top—not by chance, but by expecting the best from themselves every single day. Across New Hampshire’s tight-knit communities, several athletes have proven that a mindset of optimism and determination can take you as far as the bright lights of the NBA or an Olympic podium.

Duncan Robinson: Betting on Himself

When Duncan Robinson was growing up in New Castle, New Hampshire, the odds weren’t exactly in his favor. As a 5-foot-7 freshman, he saw little playing time on his high school basketball team. Rather than getting discouraged, Robinson used that time to sharpen his shooting skills, setting an ambitious goal of making 1,600 shots per week.

Luckily for him, between his freshman and senior year of high school, he grew from 5'7 to 6'7. In 2012, during a campus visit, Division III Williams College offered Robinson a spot on their team, which he accepted immediately. But he wasn’t done pushing himself. Through sheer determination and relentless work, he transferred and walked on at the University of Michigan, becoming just the second player in history to transfer from Division III to Division I with a full scholarship.

After going undrafted in the NBA, Robinson refused to give up. He doubled down on his training, refined his shooting, and eventually signed with the Miami Heat. Today, he is regarded as one of the NBA’s most reliable three-point shooters.

His journey from a small New Hampshire town to the NBA was anything but conventional. But Robinson expected the best from himself—he believed he could compete at the highest level and refused to let setbacks define him. His story is a powerful reminder to young athletes across the Granite State: bet on yourself, put in the work, and anything is possible.

Other New Hampshire Athletes Who Expected the Best

Carlton Fisk – Born in Bellows Falls, VT, and raised in Charlestown, NH, Fisk built a Hall of Fame career on consistency and resilience. His legendary home run in the 1975 World Series, waving the ball fair, is an iconic moment in baseball history—one that symbolizes persistence paying off. He approached every at-bat expecting the best, knowing that any swing could be the one that made history.

Jenny Thompson – One of the most decorated Olympic swimmers in history, Thompson won 12 Olympic medals, proving that overcoming early failures and expecting better performances can break records and redefine possibilities.

Lynn Jennings – A world-class distance runner, living and training in Newmarket, NH, Jennings believed in showing up every day to inch closer to greatness and became one of the best female runners of all-time. Her bronze medal at the 1992 Olympics was the result of relentless training and an unwavering belief that hard work turns potential into reality.

Athletic Resources in New Hampshire

New Hampshire is home to a range of athletic programs, training facilities, and community sports initiatives designed to support and inspire the next generation of athletes. Programs like the New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association (NHIAA) foster a competitive sports environment, while community centers and training facilities help young athletes develop their skills and confidence.

These resources prove that small towns can be the starting point for big dreams. With dedication, resilience, and the right mindset, New Hampshire’s athletes continue to show that expecting the best—and putting in the work—leads to extraordinary success.

And with Tom Raffio at the helm, one thing is certain—this is only the beginning.

Positive Profile of the Week: Rick Cohen – Expecting and Achieving the Best!

This week we are delighted to highlight a wonderful visionary and highly successful entrepreneur – right here in New Hampshire, my friend, Rick Cohen, of C&S Wholesale Grocers.

Rick’s business career has been one of continual innovation, always moving forward, betting on the future, and moving forward. After graduating from college in 1974, Rick joined C&S Wholesale Grocers, a company co-founded by his grandfather in 1918, thereafter moving the company from Massachusetts to Brattleboro, VT. Years later, in 2003, he relocated the company’s headquarters to Keene, NH where it is now headquartered.

And, today, remarkably, C&S is the nation’s largest grocery wholesaler! And, yes, it is right here, just down the road in Keene, New Hampshire!

Innovating for Long-Term Success

Rick recognized two key strategies that would ensure the company’s long-term success. First, rather than relying on layers of traditional management, he implemented self-managed teams. This approach not only reduced payroll costs but also enabled workers to earn performance-based pay tied to keeping errors below 2 percent.

"When I'm walking the warehouse, I see the motion, but I also see what should have happened two minutes ago and why it didn't happen," Rick once said. "It would be better if I had the gift to solve world peace. But I have the gift of organizing and sequencing work at a particular time and making it happen."

The second key to his success extended beyond C&S—it led to the creation of another industry-leading company. Rick founded Symbotic, an AI-driven robotics warehouse automation company that is now used by major retailers such as Walmart, Target, and Albertsons. In a move to expand its reach, he took the company public four years ago.

A Legacy Beyond Business

Despite his preference for staying out of the spotlight, Rick’s impact extends far beyond business. In 2001, Keene State College renamed The Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies in honor of Rick and his wife, Jane, in recognition of their financial support. Additionally, Jane serves as the executive producer of The Kaddish Project, a musical oratorio on genocide.

Rick Cohen may be one of New Hampshire’s most successful entrepreneurs, but his legacy is not just one of financial success—it is a testament to innovation, excellence, and quiet generosity. Thank you, Rick – you are an inspiration, a wonderful friend and a great leader in our community!

Positive Quote of the Week: Expect the Best!
