Special Edition: Newport Sunflower Festival!

The Excitement Builds…

The excitement is in the air, sunflowers are blooming across the Sunshine Town, and we will make history this Saturday in Newport, New Hampshire.

The efforts of the many people involved with the Newport Sunshine Initiative have come a long way and this Saturday we will attempt to set a Guinness World Record. People across the town of Newport and throughout the state of New Hampshire and beyond have been signing up and I can’t wait to stand shoulder to shoulder with so many great and enthusiastic people.

Most recently a resident of Newport said “Hey, I got a field of sunflowers use mine!” A group in New London is loading up a bus and coming over to help, and organizations from all over are coming to be a part of this special day.

It’s so very gratifying to see a positive spirit making a difference and being a driving force to so many good things.

Great stuff ahead, memories to make, and records to break!!! See you all this Saturday.

Sunflower Festival – How To Participate (And Make History!)

It’s going to be an amazing day in Newport… literally a day for the Record Books! Join us on the Newport Town Common this Saturday, Sept. 7th. Parking will be available throughout town with it clearly marked for your convenience. Registration opens at 10 am and we ask that everyone who wants to take place in the history making arrives by 11 am to register and get your official Guinness wristband. The record attempt will take place promptly at 11:30 am. All supplies will be provided including bouquet making materials and lots of beautiful flowers, but we are grateful for any flowers you would like to bring from your own gardens!

Bring your family, bring your friends, and bring your cameras. It’s going to be a day of history making and we can’t wait to show the pride of Newport to the world. An added bonus: food trucks, crafters, vendors, games, music, and even a special appearance by Laura from the ‘Greg and the Morning Buzz’ radio show! See you Saturday!!

Greetings From Our Beautiful Newport Town Common

Profile Of The Week: Jane Hanson

It’s fun to write the profile of the week and highlight some really cool qualities about some amazing people. This week’s profile is super special for me because it highlights a friend, celebrity, and great person who has been a wonderful coach and supporter. My dear and close friend Jane Hanson formerly of NBC-TV, who by the way will be joining the many in Newport this weekend.

Jane is most well known for her years on television as co-host of New York Live on NBC New York and her work on the Today Show.  Jane also at one point hosted her own program and has interviewed world leaders and some pretty cool people including yours truly. A fun fact is that Jane has won 9 Emmy awards throughout her career in broadcasting.

Today, Jane is guiding and training people across the world in message development and delivery. She also is a major product endorser and has leant her name to some of the most popular brands in the world.

Jane is a true inspiration to not only women but people who want to excel in public communication across the world. Every day she makes a difference and everyday Karen and I are lucky to call her our friend.

Profile: Luther Burbank

Have you ever heard of the Shasta Daisy? How about the Fire Poppy? In this week’s profile it seems appropriate that we recognize someone related to our theme this week. With that in mind, we give you Luther Burbank.

Born in 1849, Burbank was a pioneer of agricultural science. He is credited with developing over 800 strains and varieties of plant life in his career including the aforementioned flowers.

A native of Massachusetts, Luther was one of 18 children (yes, 18), and was largely self-taught in an age when botany was in its infancy.

Due to his work, others have built upon the bridges he created to develop medicines and environmentally friendly growing environments.

Cheers to Luther Burbank. Your work truly has inspired the field of plant-based science!

Quotes Of The Week – Sunflowers

“Look at its shape, with vibrant yellows and oranges, a sunflower can brighten your day...it's as if it is smiling like a happy face painted on the sun...so if you do only one thing all day, let it be to smile, so you can brighten the day of others around you, just like the sunflower” ― Bodhi Smith, Bodhi Simplique Impressionist Photography and Insights

“Never look directly at the sun. Instead, look at the sunflower.” ― Vera Nazarian, The Perpetual Calendar of Inspiration

“And the yellow sunflower by the brook, in autumn beauty stood.” ― William Cullen Bryant

“A sunflower field is like a sky with a thousand suns.” ― Corina Abdulahm-Negur

“If roses tried to be sunflowers, they would lose their beauty; and if sunflowers tried to be roses, they would lose their strength.” ― Matshona Dhliwayo
