Creating ‘Community’ With The Arts
One of the leading indicators in the upsurge and revitalization of a community often involves ‘The Arts.’ For some reason, the expression of artistic intent and creativity are the initial signs signaling the rebirth of community spirit. This is clearly the case in Newport – where positive vibes are being created by an outburst of initiatives in the arts – including art exhibits, musical performances, theater and more.
In the above videos, Shelly Hudson of Amplified Arts describes an ambitious new project to make the Newport-Claremont area a magnet for the arts. While I am also joined by musician Bill Wightman of Proctor Academy and Sullivan County Commissioner George Hebert – who share insights on how the arts are leading the way to community revitalization in the Newport region.
Town Rallies To Build New Community Center
To truly ‘build community,’ it’s important that people have an opportunity to come together and get to know one another on multiple dimensions. Most often in a physical place – where we can learn about each other’s challenges and share in the joy and excitement of positive progress.
I’m thrilled to say that the town of Newport is on the verge of taking a major step toward building a stronger community – with precisely this concept in mind. On Tuesday, May 14th, voters will be asked to support the funding of a new, modern Community Center, depicted in the design above, that is finally coming to fruition after many years of planning and consideration.
The current Recreation Center (the old National Guard Armory) was put into service fifty-two years ago – and even when first opened in 1967, was not sufficient to meet the needs of the town. Now, the citizens of Newport are rallying to support the newly proposed Community Center building – which will finally give the town that vital venue for positive interaction. Serving as a safe, positive environment for the town’s youth and young adults, as well as an active space for seniors, families and people across the generations. Engaging in recreational activities, athletic programs, spending time together and truly enjoying the benefits of community.
As Newport town manager, Hunter Rieseberg shared from his time in White River Junction, VT, a community center transforms the lives of those in the community. People have a safe place to go, look forward to the programs offered, and overall live a healthier, more fulfilling life. Veterans Community Supports Children of Fallen Patriots
There is no stronger community than that of our veterans. Together, veterans especially understand and appreciate the sacrifice of those who have served and even more so, reserve the deepest honor and gratitude for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
Therefore, it is not surprising that veterans are strong supporters of Children of Fallen Patriots – the wonderful organization whose mission it is to make sure that every child who loses a parent in active military service has the opportunity to have their education paid for all the way thru college, or vocational school or whatever preparation will give that young person the greatest opportunity to fulfill their full potential.

Environmental Awareness and Community Spirit
John White and the Friends of Farmington, NH, recently celebrated Earth Day in a way that not only showed respect for the environment, but also demonstrated creativity and generous sharing with the greater Farmington community. The group’s creativity was on ample display as they organized a fabulous art show at the public library. Most impressive - the artwork was made exclusively from recycled material! Not surprisingly, the creativity proved to be an excellent showcase to highlight environmental awareness and build community spirit. Well done to John and team!
Profile of the Week – Honorable Jeb Bradley
Jeb Bradley of Wolfeboro is no stranger to public service.
In the 1990’s, Jeb served multiple terms in the New Hampshire House of Representatives before being elected to Congress representing the First Congressional District. Jeb proudly brought Granite State values to Washington from 2002 to 2006.
In 2009, Jeb returned to public service, winning a special election to the NH State Senate, where he went on to serve as Majority Leader of the Senate from 2010 to 2018.
Jeb is a tireless advocate for veterans, a leader in preserving the ‘New Hampshire Advantage’ and dedicated in protecting our environment. If Jeb’s not taking on regulation and taxation, he can be found conquering one of our many mountains in the Granite State.
